The Garden Island and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are again teaming up with the community to try and make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, the community is asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without our help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua‘i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua‘i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If our generous donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa‘a HI 96746. Christmas Fund organizers hope their neighbors continue their traditional generosity which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Mom could use food and baby items
Maria is a single mother with an 11-month old daughter. She was left alone to raise her child with very little means. Maria emigrated from another country with the hope of starting a prosperous life here in America not realizing that her husband (at the time) would leave her alone and pregnant after she got here. She is very diligent and works two jobs to make ends meet. But help with food and baby items like diapers and toiletries would really be appreciated.
Single dad would love bike for son
Doug is raising his son Brad, working both nights and weekends to pay for his basic needs of rent and utilities. Being a single parent and caring for a child that needs constant care (ADD), he is very limited in being able to provide any extras beyond the roof over their heads. A nice bike for Brad and maybe a special dinner for the two of them to celebrate the holiday season would be a welcome surprise for this family.
Groceries would make Susanne’s holidays
Susanne is 86 years old and has impaired vision and crippling arthritis. She lives alone in a single room. Her income is too small to allow her to eat properly or buy needed prescriptions. Her doctor feels she needs to eat more protein but she cannot afford it. She is very independent but would truly appreciate a gift certificate for groceries.
Art supplies top Genevieve’s wishlist
Genevieve Johnson is 65 years old and lives alone in a senior housing facility. She suffers from severe depression and various heart problems. She enjoys painting but because she is on a limited income, her budget doesn’t allow her to purchase art supplies. She receives government assistance and other services.
Her holiday season would be brighter with a gift certificate so she could buy the art supplies she needs to continue to enjoy painting.
