LIHU’E — Boy Scouts from Troop 148 went through subdivisions Sunday to collect foodstuffs from residents for the troop’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
The collected goods are being turned over to the Salvation Army. The chartiable organization begins its annual holiday food distribution starting today, and opens its doors to for an annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Wednesday.
The Salvation Army is distributing turkeys today from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lihu’e Corps center on Hardy Street. The organization’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon is set for Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall and at the Hanapepe Corps center on the Westside.
Upcoming Thanksgiving events include the annual gathering of Lihu’e churches takes place Thanksgiving morning at Lihue United Church on Old Nawiliwili Road behind King Auto Center.
The celebration begins at 9:30 a.m., and donations of canned goods and other food items for the Kauai Food Bank are being accepted.
The third annual interfaith Thanksgiving Eve celebration is being celebrated Wedensday at 6 p.m. at the Kauai Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji of Hanapepe.
This year’s theme is “Peace and Compassion.” The religious groups participating in this year’s celebration include: West Kauai Hongwangi Mission, Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church and Hanapepe United Church of Christ.
The program begins at 6 p.m. with the ringing of the large bell, a designated historic landmark, on the Zenshuji campus. There will be Hawaiian chanting, taiko drumming and community singers from Buddhist and Christian traditions, as well as brief welcoming addresses from the ministers.
Donations for the Kaua’i Food Bank are being accepted at the gathering.
The Aloha Church in Lihu’e is held a Thanksgiving celebration yesterday.
The church was helped by the G.N. Wilcox Trust, which made a donation to the church’s food pantry, as well as the Kauai Food Bank. The Kaua’i Marriott Resort roasted the turkeys for the dinner, and the Lihu’e Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant donated mashed potatoes and gravy.
