HANAPEPE — The Kaiser High School boys soccer team played two games in as many days, with the same result – a 2-2 tie.
Friday night, the Cougar men opened their Kaua’i soccer trip with a 2-2 tie against Kaua’i High School under the lights at the New Kapa’a Ball Park, and following that stalemate, found similar results in Hanapepe Stadium against Waimea on Saturday night.
Kaua’i’s goals came from Justin Toulon, the first on a penalty kick, the second that shanked off a defender and into position for Toulon to sink the point.
The Cougar Friday night goals came from Jacob Curtis and Tamer Guirguis for the stalemate.
Saturday night, the Waimea Menehune were deflated following a red card and an own goal as Chad Thompson, who scored in the first half for Waimea had at least three close attempts, but came up empty, one slapping the wooden crossbar of the football goal, the other two zipping through the separation between the football crossbar and the soccer goal crossbar.
Jeff Kakuda opened the action for Waimea with a dribbling masterpiece up the middle for a close quarter score.
The second half became a Kaiser offensive showcase as they peppered Waimea goalie Anson Acain with goal attempts only to have Acain thwart the efforts.
But, Gavin Hino found the mark from close to mid-field with a boot from close to the sideline that sailed above Acain for the Cougar score in the second half.
A Waimea own goal earlier in that half put Kaiser in the scorebooks, and despite repeated attempts by Thompson to score, the contest ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Kaiser coach Herb Shreiner said this was a good trip for him because he learned a lot about what his boys could do.
“We brought 26 players, and 25 saw at least eight minutes of play,” Shreiner said following their Friday night game against Kaua’i.
Kaiser wraps up their road trip Sunday with a game against the Kapa’a High School Warriors starting at 10 a.m. at the Kapa’a Beach Park.
“We would’ve liked to have the game a little later, but the boys need to learn how to travel,” Shreiner said.
The Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation soccer season starts on Kaua’i on Saturday, Dec. 6 when the Kapa’a Warriors host the Kaua’i Red Raiders at Vidinha Stadium.
