NAWILIWILI — High surf generated by an unusually strong northeast swell began to back off Saturday afternoon after blasting the Eastside of Kaua’i and other islands over a three-day period.
The unpaved road along the breakwater at Nawiliwili sustained major damage, and sections of the adjacent paved road were also broken loose by the large waves.
Wave washed debris created a jagged line that runs 50-75 yards mauka of the breakwater. Dead reef fish and an eel were among the flotsam washed up.
Police signs remained in place Saturday on the road to Ahukini Pier. A man was temporarily in distress off the coast between Kahili Beach in Kilauea and Pila’a, but the Kaua’i Police Department reported he was able to make land unassisted.
The County of Kaua’i announced that no one needed to seek shelter in Kilauea Friday night. There were fears that waves washing across low-lying areas of the Eastside like the Anahola side of Aliomanu might require evacuations to the community gym in Kilauea.
