At about 6:50 a.m. Thursday, a 17-year-old Kalaheo boy apparently lost control of his vehicle on Halewili Road near Kalaheo and crashed into a utility pole. He was brought to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead, said Lt. Scott Yagihara of the Kaua’i Police Department.
The student was traveling west on Halewili Road in a compact Toyota two-door sedan near mile- marker 1 when he apparently lost control of his vehicle, hitting the pole on the south shoulder of the roadway, county officials said.
Officials said speed was a likely factor in the crash, and an investigation is under way. The boy, believed to be on his way to Waimea High School, is the fifth person on Kaua’i to die in a traffic accident this year.
