Surfing champions Shane Dorian, Kelly Slater and fellow North Shore native Andy Irons have all donated boards to be auctioned off at the 11th Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival – Kaua’i Style.
The event is set for this Sunday, Nov. 23, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki Beach. It is free and open to the public.
The festival is honoring Bethany Hamilton, the Princeville teen who lost her left arm in a shark attack in waters off Ha’ena three weeks ago today.
Dorian, Slater and Irons donated boards they used to win the “Triple Crown of Surfing.”
Surfing great Shawn Briley negotiated the donations. Slater is a six-time world champion. Irons is the current world champion, and Shane Dorian was also a surfing champion rated in the top 10 of the surfing world.
All of the surfers are currently competing in the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of O’ahu, and sent their best wishes to Hamilton for a quick recovery and a successful fund-raiser as well as sending some of their favorite guns.
The boards will be auctioned off to the highest bidder near the end of Sunday’s event, which also features many, many items in a silent auction.
