Representatives of the Navy League of the United States Kaua‘i council have announced that Kaua‘i high school seniors are invited to participate in an essay contest offering $3,500 in scholarships to top entries.
“The Evolution of the Revenue Cutter Service” is the contest topic, and entries are due by Feb. 17, 2004.
The U.S. Coast Guard as it is called today began as the Revenue Cutter Service, so essayists will learn how the agency now with the federal Department of Homeland Security evolved from its origins to its present form.
Essays will be judged on how well they address the topic, but those who submit essays will also have academic records, extracurricular activities and leadership qualities analyzed for scoring purposes.
Britney Sussman, Virginia Aguilar and Lyndi Emoto won scholarships in the contest during the 2002-03 school year.
For more information, please contact Sandra Gage, league scholarship chairperson, at 332-8390, fax 332-9667, or e-mail her at gage@hawaiian.net. High school counselors also have essay information.
