Toyoharu “Toyo” Shirai
Toyoharu “Toyo” Shirai of Lihu‘e, died at home on Oct. 30, 2003 at the age of 87.
Born in O‘ahu on May 5, 1916, he was a retired golf pro with Wailua Golf Course.
He is survived by wife, Yoshie; three sons, John (Yong-Cha) Shirai of Honolulu, Samuel M. Shirai of Lihu‘e and Arthur M. Shirai of Kent, Wash.; daughter, Martha S. Shirai of Honolulu; brother, Kazuyoshi (Kay) Shirai of Honolulu; two sisters, Yukie Ouchi of Pearl City, O‘ahu and Margaret Nakamoto of Kailua, O‘ahu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 – 11 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 15, at the Lihu‘e Christian Church; service officiated by Rev. James Koyama will begin at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.

Mary Castillo of ‘Oma‘o, died at Hale Kupuna on Nov. 10, 2003 at the age of 79.
Born in Kekaha on June 12, 1924, she was a clerk.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Scalph; son, John G. Castillo Jr.; step-daughter, Charmaine Archer; brother, Richard Eugene; two sisters, Angel Tingle and Nora Fujita; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, three generations of nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Nov. 15 at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha for a memorial service at 2:30 p.m.; inurnment to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Antonio Caday Sr.
Antonio Batara Caday, Sr. of Hanama‘ulu, died at his residence on Nov. 11, 2003 at the age of 82.
Born in the Philippines on Jan. 20, 1921, he was a journeyman for Lihue Plantation.
He is survived by his wife, Crispina Caday of Hanama‘ulu; two sons, Antonio (Arlene) Caday, Jr. of Kalaheo and Virgil Caday of Hanama‘ulu, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Immaculate Conception Church from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. where service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Joe Carroll. Burial to follow at Lihue Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Cynthia “Cindy” Chamberlin
Cynthia “Cindy” Chamberlin of Koloa died at home on Nov. 11, 2003 at the age of 57.
Born in Chicago, Ill., she was a professor at Kaua‘i Community College for 19 years and an active supporter of Malama Maha‘ulepu.
She is survived by four brothers, Mike, Peter, and Steve, who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Tom of Kaua‘i.
