Memories of being a teenager growing up on Kaua‘i in the 1950s was the order of the day when classmates of the Kaua‘i High School Class of 1953 gathered for a reunion at Kalapaki Villas and Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club recently.
The event was highlighted by laughter, reminiscing, and renewing of old friendships, graduates said.
A high point was a booklet that contained updates on each graduate, shared during the gathering. The booklet was coordinated by Sue Watase.
Some of the 1953 graduates visited their old school, led by current student leaders. The graduates recognized only three buildings from when they attended the Lihu‘e campus.
Before the banquet, 28 students who have passed on were remembered in a slide presentation. The graduating class boasted 176 students.
After-dinner entertainment was provided by classmates from O‘ahu, Kaua‘i and the Mainland.
Chairpersons for the event were Robert Ahana and Daniel Yotsuda. Co-chairpersons were Russell Miike and Henry Koga.
Committee members included Elden Tanaka, Lillian Takanishi, Dorothy Cataluna, Edith Ushio, Gladys Fujiuchi, Johnny Rabasa, William Pascua, Mervin Ahana and Marina Pascua, a honorary member.
The next reunion is scheduled for 2005 in Las Vegas.
