Storybook Theatre’s video production of “Queen Emmalani” was accepted into the 23rd annual Hawaii International Film Festival and had its premier on O‘ahu at the Honolulu Academy of The Arts Friday.
In attendance were Mark Jeffers, “Queen Emmalani” producer and executive director of Storybook Theatre; Dr. Robert Zelkovsky, cinematographer and editor; and Magenta Bouganvilla, costume designer. About 200 people attended the screening.
A screening of “Queen Emmalani” is set for this Sunday, Nov. 9, starting at 6 p.m. at the Kauai Village Theatre in Waipouli.
“Her story is one of such courage and fortitude, and we are honored to tell an important part of her story, the 1871 trek from Waimea through the Alaka‘i Swamp with over 100 people,” said Mark Jeffers. Storybook Theatre, better known for its work in children’s programming, ventured into this adult documentary format because of their respect and admiration for this beloved Queen.
The 23rd Hawai‘i International Film Festival will show 167 films from 34 countries, including 37 from Hawai‘i.
“Having our video accepted from over 1,000 submitted films to one of the top ten film festivals in the world is a great thrill for me as a video maker,” Zelkovsky said.
Primarily through the efforts of Tiffani Lizama, Kaua‘i Film Commissioner, films will be shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7, 8 and 9: Church of the Pacific in Princeville and Hanapepe Church of Christ on Friday; Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall on Saturday, and Kaua‘i Village Theater on Sunday. Admission is free. Check TGI’s Sunday TV section for a schedule, look up http://www.hiff.org or call the Kaua‘i Film Commission office at 241-6386.
