Cancelling vacation to Kaua‘i
My family and I were planning a vacation to Kaua‘i this winter with two other families, but we have cancelled our trip for one reason: we cannot understand Hawai‘i’s policy regarding large, aggressive sharks.
Everyone in our vacation group is a devoted environmentalist. Most of us do not even eat meat. But when children are being maimed by wild animals, as they were last year on the south shore and again this year on the north shore of Kauai, we all believe common sense dictates action. Hawai‘i’s State Task Force should adopt a policy similar to the one used by officals in Australia. When a big shark attacks a human there, the animal is immediately caught and destroyed.
A recent fatal shark attack in California has made the residents of our state extremely shark aware. The tragic incident involving Bethany Hamilton received a full page article in Section One of the LA Times. If you value your tourist economy, we urge you to reconsider your policy regarding large aggressive sharks. Until you do, we cannot in clear conscience bring our children to swim in your waters.

Looking for penpal
I am trying to find a pen pal I had back in the late 40s and early 50’s her name was Harune Shigmori (now I may not have this just right as I have lost all letters even the photo she sent.) She would have graduated from High School sometime between 1952 and 1954. I believe she was from Waimea, Kaua‘i. If someone knows her or you have had a Class Reunion for those years. I would appreciate an email or letter. Patricia Bell Cogswell, 70 Brooklane North, Twins Falls, ID 83301 or roncogs@rmci.net.

Who’s running Kaua‘i county?
I wonder who is running Kaua‘i county.
Now we have the case of a lifeguard refusing to obey direct orders from his superiors. Not only wasn’t he fired on the spot (which seems the logical response) but he is now suing his employer (we the taxpayers) for damages because he was given a direct order that he didn’t like.
To me, the employee sound like a potential loose cannon. If he has this type of disdain for his superiors, what will happen if (when?) some resident or visitor says or does something with which he disagrees? More lawsuits against the county? How can we tolerate such a person representing our island?
A recent story inferred that our ‘retiring’ police chief will be getting, in addition to his regular retirement and separation pay, an additional $200,000 in hush money to keep him from suing us again. That is $4 for every man, woman, and child on Kauai. I wonder if a family of 5 is happy about donating $20 of their hard earned money to the man who has pretty much single-handedly destroyed the morale of our police department. Under his leadership, we have recently been told that the police can do nothing about crime and it is our responsibility to lock our cars in parking lots. It seems to me that our ‘retiring’ chief should pay the county of Kauai for the damage he has caused – rather than get a bonus.
Are these situations caused by the power of the public employee unions or by the ineptitude of the County administration and council? Probably some of both. The real question – is there any way to do something about it?
