UH cross country finishes 8th at WAC
Kapa‘a High School graduate Sharlene Carillo finished 68th overall at 21:08 as one of the strong freshman showing by the University of Hawai‘i women’s cross country team at the 2003 Western Acthletic Conference Cross Country Championships held at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif.
Despite the strong showing, the squad finished in eighth place, but head coach Carmyn James was pleased with the effort of her young and inexperienced team.
“Five of our nine runners this morning were freshmen, three juniors, and one senior, Robin McRobbie,” James said.
The Rainbow Wahine were led by the Canadian duo of Dana Buchanan and Chantelle Laan, Buchanan finishing 22nd overall with a time of 18 minutes and 45 seconds.
Laan finished at 19:04, 31st overall.
Also scoring for UH were McRobbie (39th, 19:34), Monica Su (41st, 19:37), and Heidi Frank (53rd, 20:09).
The 5,000-meter course, according to James, may be one of the toughest cross country course in North America, the team counting 22 hills.
UH’s non-scoring members were Jennifer Bell (54th, 20:13), Sheena Thain (59th, 20:46), Carolyn Berger (65th 20:58), and Carrillo.
