Scorpions, Strikers battle to tie
HANAPEPE – The final game of the season was more than enough to extract oohs and aahs from soccer fans at Hanapepe Field as the Hanapepe Steel Scorpions fought to maintain their 9-0 season record.
But, when the dust settled, the Scorpions had to settle for a no-loss record as they ended the day in a 2-2 tie with the Koloa Strikers.
Micah Quinlan drew first blood for the Scorpions in the first quarter that was highlighted by a three-man collison that resulted in Isaac Fierro suffering a shoulder injury that could not keep him off the field.
Anthony Gammerino answered for the Strikers in the second quarter bringing the half to a 1-1 deadlock.
The combined Scorpion effort opened the second half as Dallas Correa capitalized on a play that started with a punt from goalie Dylan DelaCruz, pass by John Medeiros followed by a dribble downfield by Austin Chicoine.
Scorpion’s Dylan Morrison-Fogel battled with Strikers’ Dylan Snyder for most of the final quarter, but Rad and Ridge Floria, Makana Miranda, Patrick Thesken, and Eric Casticimo put the ball in position for Darren Valencio to score for the Strikers, knotting the game at 2-2.
Irons to face Barreto in Brazil
JOAQUINA, Florianopolis, Brazil — Reigning world champion Andy Irons will face Tanio Barreto of Brazil in the upcoming Round Three of the Nova Schin Festival WCT Brasil at the main site of Joaquina.
Barreto was one of the wildcards that dominated the Thursday competition, using his local knowledge to edge Dean Morrison of Australia.
For Morrison, the defeat was just one of a string of misfortunes as his room caught alight after a candle fire caused the evacuation of his and surrounding rooms.
A decision will be made Friday morning for continuation of the meet with a possible move to Praia Mole.
