Irons survives opening
JOAQUINA, Florianopolis, Brazil — Reigning world champion Andy Irons survived a close “losers” round Wednesday as the Nova Schin Festival WCT Brasil opened after relocating to Caldeirao Beach.
Working in 4 – 6 ft. surf, Irons fell a number of times and selected some poor rides before finally locking in the low-scoring heat’s best ride for a 6.0 near the end.
Fabricio Machado, Irons’ opponent, only required an equally small score during the final two minutes, but was unable to catch a good win.
Mick Lowe of Australia defeated Diego Rosa of Brazil 14.16 to 10.5 and in the third heat of the day, Taylor Knox of the USA defeated Leonardo Neves of Brazil.
