Kaua‘i Police Department officers Wednesday arrested Jon Michael Bryan, 45, a man living on Kaua‘i wanted by the FBI for allegedly kidnapping his daughter, a student at Kapa‘a Elementary School. Bryan is also accused of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

KPD officers received a request from police in Delray Beach, Fla., requesting assistance in locating Bryan, who allegedly kidnapped his daughter in 1998.
Parental kidnapping is a third-degree felony, and there has been a federal arrest warrant out for Bryan since 2000.
KPD detectives confirmed Bryan’s daughter was attending Kapa‘a Elementary School. Upon verification of her identify the daughter was taken into custody by KPD detectives and turned over to officials with the state’s child protection division.
Police waited until Bryan arrived at Kapa‘a Elementary School to pick up his daughter, and he was arrested at 12:47 p.m. without incident.
He is being held at the KPD cell block, and KPD officials are awaiting word from Florida officials on whether or not an extradition order will be issued.
According to the FBI Web site (www.fbi.gov), in mid-1998 Bryan picked up his daughter from her mother for a scheduled visit. Bryan, the non-custodial parent, was supposed to return the child to her mother 30 days later, but failed to do so.
Bryan was last seen outside his apartment in Delray Beach, in the early morning hours of July 27, 1998. Prior to this sighting, Bryan and his daughter had been visiting with his mother.
Bryan reportedly told his mother that he and his daughter were to travel to the Florida Keys to go camping, according to the FBI Web site.
On Aug. 3, 1998, a Florida state warrant was issued, charging Bryan with parental kidnapping. On Oct. 12, 2000, a federal arrest warrant was issued for Bryan in the Southern District of Florida, alleging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
