HANAPEPE — The Lihu‘e Patriots PeeWee squad clinched their Pop Warner division title with a 28-0 shutout over the Hanapepe Colts Sunday morning at Hanapepe Stadium.
Building on their 14-0 halftime lead, the Patriots notched a pair of touchdowns in the final stanza of play to take the lead, and title in the PeeWee division.
With 9:22 remaining in the contest, Devin Lopes peeled off a 20-yard scoring run followed by an 81-yard touchdown put down by Paleka Yasay with 5:14 remaining on the clock.
Keala Lovell did the point-after boot that forced the clock into the running mode as Hanapepe tried desperately to score before time ran out.
Kalapaki Ellis and Christopher Longboy headed up the defensive unit for Lihu‘e that kept the Colts’ Aaron Ramos, Cole Parangao and Cody Owens in check for most of the game.
Nelson Acosta and Albert Fernandez were noted for their defensive contributions for Hanapepe in the loss.
With two games remaining on the calendar, Lihu‘e PeeWee holds a 7-0 record with the Koloa Rams following at 4-1-1.
The Kekaha Seahawks are in third place with 2-3-1 and Hanapepe finishes the week at 1-3-2 while the Kapa‘a Steelers are 0-7-0.
Hanapepe will have an opportunity to improve their record as they meet Kapa‘a in the afternoon series this Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
The morning series will feature Koloa hosting Kekaha while the Lihu‘e Junior PeeWee will tangle with the Northshore Na Ali‘i in the midday matchup.
