WAIMEA — It was not pretty. It went three games, but Waimea ended Kapa‘a’s season on a losing note, winning the girls games, 24-26, 25-20, 26-24 before going on to take the Kapa‘a boys in another three games, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15.
Waimea’s Cailee Koga and Jessica Jacinto got to see action in the girls matchup while the boys saw Colin Morikawa get his feet wet in the boys varsity matchup that was led by the combined blocking and hitting of Josh Cabral, John Karratti, Casey Kaohelaulii, and Jeremy McDown with Bryan Hayashi getting in his share of hits down the left.
The women were led by Nue Wong’s power hitting along with a mixed plate from Fa‘afofoga Taala with Robyn Arrington tying up the loose ends.
The dual victory sets the stage for Saturday’s encounter with the Kaua‘i Red Raiders in the season finale as the Menehune girls face a must-win contest to force a playoff for the second round.
A Red Raider victory for the girls gives Kaua‘i that division title outright, the Kaua‘i girls battling to earn the first round earlier in the month, and enter the arena with a 3-0 record while the Menehune come in with a 2-1 showing.
The Menehune men sit in the driver’s seat heading to the Raiderdome, Wednesday night’s win giving them a 3-0 standing against Kaua‘i’s 2-1 record.
A Red Raider win here would force a playoff for both the second round before settling the KIF title.
The JV contests had Waimea controlling the outcome of the girls matchups, 25-14, 25-14 while the Kapa‘a boys took home their game, 25-15, 26-24.
Game time Saturday is set for 3 p.m. for the JV games, and varsity starting no earlier than 5:30 p.m
