The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation has awarded $5,000 to Kauai Habitat for Humanity to assist with the completion of 20 homes in Hanapepe and to fund the predevelopment costs of its planned 125 home subdivision near ‘Ele‘ele.
The Habitat for Humanity mission is helping to provide decent, affordable housing options for those who otherwise would not be able to live in a home of their own, said A&B Foundation chair Meredith Ching in a press release.
The A&B Foundation has made a number of grants to Kauai Habitat for Humanity over the years demonstrating a long-standing commitment to housing for the residents of Kaua‘i.
In accepting the grant, Kauai Habitat for Humanity’s Executive Director Jim Ehle said, “We are grateful to the A&B Foundation for their support. This grant will help make possible the completion homes in Hanapepe being built by hardworking volunteers and homeowners. It will also aid our predevelopment plans for our larger subdivision in Eleele. The A&B Foundation has a long history of helping to secure housing for Hawai‘i‘s people and Kauai Habitat is delighted that the foundation continues to support our operations.”
Since 1996, the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation has awarded the Kauai
Habitat for Humanity nearly $35,000, including an initial $25,000 grant to develop the ‘Ele‘ele I Luna housing project.
Kauai Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The Kaua‘i affiliate was founded in 1992, followingHurricane ‘Iniki, which damaged thousands of homes on Kaua‘i.
Since that time Kauai Habitat has completed over 80 new homes, housing families that pay no-interest mortgages and have a better quality of life.
The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation is funded by the business activities of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and its subsidiaries. These subsidiaries include Matson Navigation Company and A&B Properties, Inc; subsidiaries on Kaua‘i include, Kauai Coffee Company and Kauai Commercial Company.
