Megan Abubo of Hawai‘i won the opening heat of round one against fellow Hawaiian Rochelle Ballard and Chelsea Georgeson of Australia at the Roxy Pro France meet, the natural footer selecting a couple of clean right-handers and executing her trademark forehand snaps for the scores.
“I was pretty lucky to find some waves and do a couple of good turns,” Abubo said. “Good to see some surf finally, so we can get into rhythm.”
In heat three, Keala Kennelly of Kaua‘i fell to Emmanuelle Joly of France, 9.17 points to 10.1 points.
Joly, the 32-year-old mother of two took the Roxy Pro Trials before besting Kennelly.
In the Quiksilver Pro France, Australians dominated the first six heats in the men’s $250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT).
Hawai‘i’s Andy Irons is yet to see action, seated in Heat 8 along with Australia’s Jake Paterson and France’s Frederick Robin.
