Former county planning director Dee Crowell, banker Jim Mayfield and radio station manager Ray Paler were elected Saturday to three-year terms on the Kaua‘i Island Utilities Cooperative board.
Crowell received 2,094 votes, Mayfield 1,872 and Paler 1,707.
Election Systems & Software, Inc. will once again be conducting the election. Omaha-based ES&S is the world’s largest election-management company, and has held the contract for all statewide governmental elections in Hawai‘i since 1998.
The election day featured a community event at Kukui Grove Pavilion that drew about 600 members of the community.
A set of KIUC bylaw changes were also approved by the membership. Apparently, about half or less of the number of ballots were cast in the election Saturday compared to the inaugural election in 2002, when 7,595 ballots were counted. There are about 20,000 electric users served by KIUC.
Crowell, who was nominated by a petition, is a resident of Waimea and attended the University of Southern California and Kamehameha Schools. He is a licensed architect in Hawai‘i and a member of the Kauai Water Board. He is currently the regional manager for Sandwich Isle Communications, a rural telephone company licensed to provide service to Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.
Mayfield is a well-known banker on Kaua‘i and was nominated by a KIUC committee and is one of the founders of the cooperative. He lost in the first board election.
Paler was nominated by a KIUC committee and is a graduate of Indiana University at Bloomington. He is the station manager of radio station KAWV 98.1FM.
