Phyllis Kunimura, founder and director of KIDS (Kaua‘i Independent Daycare Services, Inc.), a private preschool in Kapa‘a, has issued an invitation to a reunion, of sorts, for students who attended the school in 1992 and 1993.
Students in those years buried a time capsule, containing newspaper clippings, drawings, pictures and other materials. On Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m., the capsule will be unearthed on campus.
“KIDS students born in 1988 and 1989 will remember our time capsule,” Kunimura said. “Now it’s time to dig it up.”
Hurricane ‘Iniki totally destroyed the church building school officials and volunteers were renovating for school use in September 1992, yet by January of 1993 KIDS and the kids moved into a newly constructed, large school, she said.
The 76 students, ages three and four at the time, as well as the staff, appreciated all the donated materials, labor, contributions from developers, construction companies and other friends that made the new school a reality, Kunimura said.
“To mark this special occasion, we buried a time capsule containing pictures, newspaper clippings and drawings,” she said.
“We invite all children attending KIDS during 1992 and 1993, as well as other graduates, to join us for light refreshments and pupus” on Oct. 1. Please call the school, 822-0262, to RSVP, or for more information.
