Waimea and Kaua‘i JV squads battled through four quarters of play to finish in a 7-7 stalemate Friday night to set the stage for the varsity showdown that followed.
Big Caylen Wada of the Kaua‘i High JV defense stormed through the line for a blocked punt in the second quarter, but the resulting gallop to the end zone was called back on an illegal blocking penalty as a fellow Red Raider was nipped for blocking from the back.
That did not stop the Red tide who seemed to have the clouds part on the play as QB Tron Rule followed up the taste of paydirt with a 34-yard connection to Bradley Semana for the first score of the day with 8:10 showing in the first half.
Jockeying to keep the Menehune at bay, the Red Raiders faltered in their effort midway through the final quarter as the visting Waimea JV set up for a 36-yard field goal attempt, only to have that effort padded by a Menehune infraction.
The field goal failed and it seemed that Kaua‘i would take a 7-0 victory into the locker room, but with 3:14 showing on the clock, Waimea QB Kenny Estes found Dustin Rita in the end zone on a 9-yard toss for the 6-7 threat.
The point-after boot by Estes deadlocked the contest 7-7.
But, the fireworks were still alive as Waimea’s Nash Danley-Bermoy returned a punt 50 yards to set up a tie-breaker with 1:06 showing in the contest only to have Kaua‘i effectively quash that threat as Bo Bregman intercepted an Estes aerial with less than a minute remaining to lock the scoreboard on the 7-7 stalemate.
Kaua‘i will host Kapa‘a on Friday, Sept. 26 at Vidinha Stadium where kickoff takes place at 5 p.m.
