Waimea shooters open season with a win over Kaua‘i

HANAPEPE — Waimea High School took both ends of the KIF Air Riflery competition Thursday, the boys outshooting Kaua‘i 1166 to 1061, and the Waimea girls outdistancing Kaua‘i 1162 to 992.

Maj. Victor Aguilar, coach of the Waimea High School Air Riflery team, noted the keen sense of competition being demonstrated by Kori Sakahashi during the KIF meet held Thursday.

“He just broke the 250-mark during practice a few days ago,” Aguilar said.

Sakashashi led the Menehune boys with a 255 total with Anthony Acain coming in second at 233.

On the women’s side, Waimea was led by Ashley Shimono with 244 points, Shimono flashing a smile for each miss in the standing position. Jonelle Renti Cruz posted 233 points for second.

Bryce Hamamoto led the Kaua‘i boys with a 235 total while Terra Bell led the Raider women with 231 points.

Douglas Nobriga, coach for the Kaua‘i team, noted the strong showing of his first-year shooters, a lot of them having their first competition Thursday.

Kaua‘i High School will Island School next Thursday while Waimea will travel to Kapa‘a.

First shots go off at 3 p.m.
