Rotarians do good deeds; spam musubi wasn’t one of them
I just returned home to the Marshall Island from a visit on Kaua‘i. My relatives took me to the Farm Fair in Lihue on Sunday. While the children were busy getting on every possible rides we visited the Greatest Spam Musubi contest intended to break a silly world record. A bunch of local businesses lead by a local Rotary club were building the great musubi monster. Well, I have seen many non-sense things in my life, so one more wouldn’t hurt.
The people participating in the action seemed to have enjoyed what they were doing. What struck me was that it was a fundraiser event to help a certain Diabetes Association. That sounds really phony, because regardless of its local appeal the Spam musubi is not one of the items that would get in the Triangle of Good Foods for Proper Nutrition. And not knowing that one of the major reasons of the many diabetes cases in Hawai‘i, the Marshall Islands and elsewhere in the Pacific basin is the lack of proper nutrition is an absolute shortsightedness. And this highlighted event will continue to reinforce bad eating habits.
Maybe Hormel the maker of Spam subsidized the event in exchange for the good advertising. Well, they can afford it, but I really wonder about the competency, even the legitimacy of the beneficiary Diabetes Association that would agree to this negative campaign when both Hawaii and our Republic spends substantial amounts on promoting proper nutrition to fight and prevent diabetes. Maybe the Rotary clubs of Kaua‘i should recruit a few members from the medical or healthcare profession who are well informed about the problems of the local communities.
This should not discredit the many good deeds and the tremendous help of the Rotarians in other areas, but this contest clearly shows bad taste. Hopefully they are not working on free distribution of condoms to promote sexual abstinence.
