After arresting 64 felony fugitives on Maui earlier this month with Operation Kaulike-Maui, United States Attorney Edward H. Kubo, Jr. has a message for fugitves who may be on Kaua‘i: turn yourselves in or face federal charges.
“We’re coming to Kaua‘i,” he said. “My warning to all fugitives is to address their problems now, rather than wait for us to pick them up.”
The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force was created in Febraury to aggressively locate and arrest repeat offenders, primarily those had committed violent crimes, weapon offenses, and drug offenses.
Although Kubo would not get into specifics about when the task force is heading to Kaua‘i, he confirmed that they are coming. And the folks on Kaua‘i with outstanding criminal charges should turn themselves in, or perhaps face federal charges, since several of those fugitives on Maui involved in state cases are now being considered for federal prosecution.
Kaulike, which means “equality, justice,” was a joint collaboration between the U.S. Marshal’s Office, the Maui Police Department, and the State Sherriff’s Office. They not ony arrested 64, but they also recovered four firearms, ammunition, over 12 ounces of crystal methamphetamine (ICE), 18 marijuana plants, and various drug paraphernalia.
Those on Kaua‘i with outstanding warrants are asked to contact the Public Defender’s Office to go over details of their surrender, Kubo said.
