Take care to use the proper terms
I applaud and, in fact, celebrate Mr. Hamilton’s August 24th opinion letter, not only for his eloquent presentation of the facts, but most of all, for his resisting the use the word “Democratic” when he means “Democrat.” Contrary to the news “media” written and broadcast, and contrary to our political leaders, he has held to the words’ meaning and not allowed further damage to the language.
When we use the term “democratic representative”, is that person representing democracy or just a member of the Democrat party? And, wouldn’t a Republican representative be democratic?
We may think it’s minor because everybody in the country knows what we really mean, but remember, the person listening to CNN on satellite in the middle of Iraq or Afghanistan hears the President of The United States say that we are willing to sacrifice our young men’s lives and our country’s resources to enable them to have a “democratic” form of government. In the next broadcast breath, the video/sound byte presents a person, identified as the “democratic representative”, vilifying the President for the position he has taken. No wonder our foreign public image is poor. We can’t, or won’t, speak our own language.
If we can’t agree on the meanings of words, how can we ever share ideas and values? Please care, you may be the only chance remaining.

‘Loud-mouths’ are the real problem
Peacocks on Kuamo‘o Road are not an issue compared to loud aggressive human residents. Frequent incidences of verbal road rage and aggressive tailgating are becoming more commonplace.
The speed limit is 35 m.p.h. until the hilltop when the limit becomes 25 m.p.h. The few and the brave obey this speed limit. The hapless souls who buy car insurance know premiums are impacted by moving violations. Getting home 30 seconds earlier is not your sovereign right. Shrieking human loud-mouths, not peacocks, are the problem.

Keep Kaua‘i alive
Affordable housing, good public transportation, growing food and sharing the seeds. These are major priorities in my life. It’s hard to have fun when our basic lifelines are deteriorating. Let’s get out of our cars and shopping malls and grow some organic food. And spread some real aloha. Mahalo a thousand times for this beautiful island. Let’s keep it alive!
