Florence Kamei of Kalaheo is celebrating 100 years of life, following a Japanese cultural tradition.
She performed in a special Hakuji no Iwai dance recital program hosted by the Kaua‘i Shinbuyo Kai in honor of her 100th year celebration.
Kamei, who was born on Aug. 6, 1904 is 99, but in Japanese custom, you are a year old when you are born, thus, Kamei was 18 days into her 100th year at the Sunday program.
Mayor Bryan Baptiste honored the matriarch with a proclamation, and Hiroko Taniguchi, representing the Japan Counsul General in Honolulu, made a special trip to Kaua‘i to represent the Japanese government at the event.
