WAIMEA — Host Waimea High School and visiting Iolani control the lead with perfect 10-0 records following the first day of play at the Waimea High School Invitational volleyball tournament taking place at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Waimea controls the Blue Pool by downing Seabury (21-12, 21-11), Kamehameha-Hilo (21-6, 21-11), Damien (21-16, 21-17), and the Kapa‘a JV (21-10, 21-10) on Thursday.
Iolani earned their top berth in the White Pool by besting Kaua‘i (21-17, 21-14), Hawai‘i Baptist Academy (21-19, 21-13), Kapa‘a (21-9, 21-19), the Waimea JV (21-16, 21-13), and the Pearl City purple team (21-13, 21-7).
As of Friday morning, Kaua‘i High School was 5-3, picking up wins over Kapa‘a (21-15, 21-19) and the Waimea JV (21-7, 21-17) and splitting with Hawai‘i Baptist (20-21, 21-12).
Kapa‘a touted a 5-5 record, dropping to Iolani and Kaua‘i, splitting with Hawai‘i Baptist (21-12, 18-21), and sweeping the Waimea JV (21-9, 21-14) and Pearl City purple (21-19, 21-16).
Following six pool play matches on Friday, the top four teams with best records of each pool will advance to the eight-team Championship Bracket while the remaining three in each pool will play in the Consolation Bracket.
White Pool standings are Iolani (10-0), Kaua‘i (5-3), Kapa‘a (5-5), Pearl City purple (4-4), Hawai‘i Baptist (4-6), Waimea JV (0-10), and Waiakea yet to play.
Blue Pool standing include Waimea (10-0), Damien (6-2), Seabury Hall (4-4), Iolani JV (3-9), Kamehameha-Hilo (2-6), and Kapa‘a JV (2-8).
Games continue through Saturday, starting from 9 a.m.
There is no admission to the tournament, although a wide variety of foods, drinks, as well as a souvenir tee-shirt is available to help with expenses.
