LIHU‘E — When Patrick Henriques pulled his 8.8 pound oio off the scales, it was obvious he was elated with the results.
“It’s my personal best!” he beamed. “I beat my own record!”
That 8.8-pounder proved to be the winning fish in the Oio division as the Easter Seals of Kaua‘i wrapped up their 26th, and final shoreline fishing tournament Sunday at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
Wayne Bonilla lost little time getting to the center with his 58.66 pound ulua that proved to be the winning fish in that category, Bonilla returning the fish to his Lihu‘e home while he kept an eye on the traffic in that division.
Bruddah Martin was less than half-a-pound better than challenger Kerry Yokoyama in the Papio division, Martin taking the category with a 6.92-pound entry over Yokoyama’s 6.58-pound submission.
Norman Duterte was the sole entrant with a 27.02-pound kahala in the Other Ocean Fish over 10 pounds category, and an 8-pounder earned Shawn Baliaris top billing in the Other Ocean Fish 10 pounds and Under.
Tanya Ramos’ 3.18-pound barracuda was good enough to take the special Rice Shopping Center-sponsored Children’s category over Melina Obar’s 2.90 pound tucanare.
Claudean Obar came up with a 4.10 pound tucanare to take the Freshwater category over Aaron Sakai and Kevin Takekuma.
In addition to the conventional standings, a special ‘Smallest fish’ was presented in each category.
