NAWILIWILI — Junior lifeguards celebrated the completion of their annual summer program with an island-wide challenge that was held Saturday at Kalapaki Beach with a team of 35 members being selected to represent the island of Kaua‘i at the state challenge which will be held this Saturday, August 16 on O‘ahu.
Kalani Vierra of the Kaua‘i Water Safety office said that due to the support the program has received from community businesses and organizations, this is the first time Kaua‘i will have a full contingent of challengers at the state meet.
Emma Makepa-Foley, one of this year’s challengers Saturday, is a two-time defending champion at the state level and will see if she can three-peat.
Greg Fujimoto who took one of the Beach Flags event, was hesitant to join the program his dad, Wayne, a fire captain at the Hanapepe fire station said.
But, once the training began, Fujimoto got into the swing and is already anticipating signing up for next year’s program.
Saturday’s events had the junior water safety officers demonstrate the skills they learned in the week-long session.
Full results will be published in a future edition of TGI.
