Most if not all defendants who appeared in Fifth Circuit Court Thursday were sentenced to terms of probation for their crimes. Among them, a forger who tried to cash a stolen check; a man who attempted to hide a bag of marijuana from police during a traffic stop; someone who used someone else’s ATM card to steal money; and a man who took some koa wood from Koke‘e.
- Travis Shimomura, 18, of Kapa‘a, was sentenced to probation for five years for two counts of forgery. Special conditions to his probation include 6 months incarceration, drug treatment, drug testing and payment of court fees. Shimomura could be released before 6 months if he successfully completes a residential drug treatment program.
Shimomura was arrested Nov. 19 for attempting to cash a stolen and forged check at Bank of Hawaii. The teller confirmed that the check was stolen and forged and called the police. In responding to the incident police discovered that Shimomura had previously passed another stolen and forged check from the same account to pay the bail bond for his associate’s girlfriend. Shimomura entered guilty pleas to the felony offenses May 14.
- Glenn Bisarra, 20, of Kekaha, was sentenced to probation for 5 years for possession of methamphetamine. Special conditions to his probation include six months incarceration, drug treatment, drug testing, and court fees. Bisarra may be released before 6 months if he successfully completes a residential drug treatment program.
Bisarra was arrested on April 25 when he was pulled over for traffic violations. Police said Shimomura was trying to hide from the officer a bag of what appeared to be marijuana on the floorboard of the truck. Bisarra was arrested, a search warrant was obtained for the truck and police recovered plastic packets containing methamphetamine and other drug-related items. Bisarra entered a guilty plea to the felony charge on May 29.
- Cory Waialeale, 30, of Kalaheo, was sentenced to probation for 5 years for felony convictions relating to taking and using a debit card to withdraw money from an ATM without permission. Special conditions to his probation include six months incarceration and 400 hours community service work. Waialeale was found guilty of the felony offenses on May 20.
- Sebastian Riso, 28, of ‘Ele‘ele, was sentenced to probation for 5 years for a felony theft conviction relating to taking koa wood from the Koke‘e area. Special conditions to his probation include a $2,000 fine, $3,000 restitution to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and court fees.
