A group of kayakers apparently partying at a beach below Kilauea Lighthouse were reported missing Wednesday afternoon, nearly causing rescue personnel responding to a helicopter crash to reroute or get assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.
“Nobody needed to be rescued because they were missing for a little while, they were on a beach,” said a county lifeguard supervisor Wednesday afternoon. He said the call came in at about 11:45 a.m. and the search and rescue went on until at least 1 p.m.
According to a representative from the Coast Guard Search and Rescue team based at Nawiliwili, the County of Kaua‘i recalled the alert just several minutes after the kayakers were reported in distress.
According to a county lifeguard supervisor, water safety personnel from Hanalei Bay were dispatched using the jet ski. Upon their arrival, they found the group of paddlers were apparently sunbathing and swimming.
