JEFFREYS BAY, SOUTH AFRICA — The Billabong Pro was again postponed today due to continued small surf. Organizers initially placed the $250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) on hold throughout the day in case the expected increase arrived sooner, but a huge swell generated in the Roaring Forties is still due to batter the entire coastline of the Southern tip of Africa this weekend.
The unseasonable sunny and warm mid-winter conditions experienced inJeffreys Bay the past few days are set to change with a 10 degree drop in temperature and gale force Westerly winds predicted tomorrow. It is these conditions, caused by the huge frontal systems that pass between the tip of the continent and the Antarctic ice floes during the winter months (June to August), that generate the swells which are then shaped by the topography of Cape St Francis to arrive at the point in Jeffreys Bay as perfect surfing waves. This, coupled with the fact the wind which brings the surf – the Southwester – is also perfectly offshore and makes for ideal surfing conditions at the famed venue.
Internet prediction models for this weekend are indicating a near perfect set of surfing conditions and excitement is running high for the continuation of the 2003 Billabong Pro in the kind of epic waves Supertubes is famous for.
Following in the footsteps of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in Tahiti, the Jeffreys Bay tournament will once again be a three-camera webcast with live streaming footage, live scores and commentary available on http://www.billabongpro.com or www.aspworldtour.com.
