Aloha Garden Island Forum and Kauai County Council Members,
I am writing in response to the recent county council member meeting concerning the construction of an aircraft runway out at PMRF.
There was much testimony expressing disfavor for such a project with great concerns for it’s environment and community impact. I too, do not support this initiative and feel that it greatly reflects the will of our government and not the people it supposed to be representing.
Mr. Munechika gave an emotional testimony toward the end of the meeting where he expressed his support of the military on the premise that it is a changing world; one that seeks to do us harm. I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for Mr. Munechika along with his family members that fought for the freedoms America has today. I wish to offer agreement that yes it is a changing world. A world that can no longer tolerate military might as the solution to the worlds problems.
Mr. Munechika, whi I respect you view, I believe that it is time to move into a new view of how this great country of ours can be spared from additional harm. We will not find solutions to our problems in the proliferation of weapons but rather in the proliferation of our core of human virtues. You may think this sounds very sweet and “flowery” and maybe so. But the world’s problems are not political, financial nore are they military.
The world’s problems are spiritual. (not to be confused with religion) Even in that statement, I can feel people shrinking in disdain. The fact that we refuse to act on what our heart tells us to be good and right is a reflection of the spiritual crisis that we are in. The expansion of an aircraft runway for training exercises, missile testing and any additional military interest here on Kauai does not reflect the will of the people. The people have spoke and have been speaking out againt the use of PMRF for some time now, as council members it is time to listen and support the people that support this beautiful island.
Please do not make a decision on this issue based on money and all that it promises to bring; but rather make a decision based on the core of human virtue. Does it serve humankind to continue promoting the concept of war? Or can we be a vehicle for change in our world?
We are a small community but we can start to change our world from right here. We can act to do what is right for the world by showing the world that we do not support expanding our military but rather support using its resources to create a cleaner environment, and humanitarian force like no other. I support a world of hopeful people not a government that continues to support fear. It is in remaining hopeful that change will come for the good of mankind. Fear will only continue the pattern of violence that we have come so willing to accept.
With great appreciation for your time and interest.
Mary Wheatley
