The Kauai Keiki and High School Rodeo Association (KKHSRA) held its second annual golf tournament fundraiser this past weekend at Kukuiolono Golf Course.
Close to 70 golfers turned out early Saturday morning at the Kukuiolono Golf Course to help support the four finalist for the National High School Rodeo Finals Rodeo.
KKHSRA would like to thank the generous sponsors and all who turned out to support the KKHSRA National Finals Rodeo Qualifiers.
Thanks to the generous donations and the kind sponsorship of various businesses/people, these four qualifiers will be able to accomplish their dreams of attending the National High School Finals Rodeo.
A special thanks goes out to Mr. Richard Brun, the Kukuiolono Golf Course and Staff.
The National High School Finals Rodeo Qualifiers are Alana Brun, Randy Brun, Marcus Laymon, and Kurtis Low.
These High Schoolers will be traveling to Farmington, New Mexico to represent the state of Hawaii.
Alana Brun qualified 5th place for Goat Tying.
Randy Brun and partner Riley Pedro (Oahu) won the Dally Team Roping event and Marcus Laymon and partner Kurtis Low qualified 3rd in the same event.
Randy Brun also qualified 4th in calf roping and was honored with the award for being the state’s 2003 Rookie of the Year.
The National High School Rodeo Finals is the largest rodeo in the world with more than 1,500 high school contestants from 39 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia.
A qualifier and chaperone can cost a family approximately $5,000 – $6,000 with the majority of expense coming from the rental of their mount (horse).
Because it is not an option to ship your horse, contestants traveling from Hawaii arrive at a severe disadvantage.
Firstly, they need to find a horse that is available and affordable and secondly, besides the nerves that come with competing, they’ll need to get in synch with this “stranger”.
