HONOLULU — A mid-week swell will have the South Shore crawling with surfers, but 180 plus longboard surfers will get a piece of the pie all to themselves at this weekend’s event.
The Hawaiian Style Kewalos Kup is the second event in the 2003 HLF Steinlager Series, a tour of 5 longboard surf events.
Kewalo Basin is infamous for it’s shallow, barreling lefts and often times peeling rights depending upon the angle of the swell.
Reigning HPU Pro champ Joey Valentin will be the one to watch – as he has won this event at least 2 times since 1997.
Along with the $2,000 prize purse, the HPU Pro will draw names such as Kanoa Dahlin and Bonga Perkins.
Thirteen other amateur divisions for both wahine (women) and kane (men) will be waxing their boards as well for some fun.
Steinlager is in its 3 year titling the Hawaiian Longboard Federation Series.
Steinlager’s commitment to local athletes and sports such as surfing and canoe paddling helps perpetuate what we all love about Hawaii.
Without support from companies like Steinlager, competitive surfing would not be here for future generations.
The Hawaiian Longboard Federation (HLF), a non-profit organization, was established in 1997 to perpetuate the sport of longboard surfing by providing local venues for amateur and professional competition.
In the process, the HLF prepares Hawaiian surfers to compete internationally for the coveted World Longboard Tour.
