The drowning at Waiohai Beach Sunday was the third ocean-related death on Kauai in 2003.
The victim’s identity was not released as of Tuesday. He is described as a 56-year-old man from Utah. Medical examiners at Wilcox Health are to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the norm for all ocean-related deaths.
Lifeguards at the scene and American Medical Response paramedics attempted to revive the man and transported him to the Wilcox ER. The Wilcox emergency room reported receiving the victim at 1:42 p.m.
Circumstances surrounding the death are still unclear.
NOAA tide predictions showed that the tide would have been low at the Waiohai Beach at the time of the incident.
According to the County of Kauai public information office, other ocean-related deaths recorded this year include a March 25 incident when a visitor was swept out to sea from Queen’s Bath on rocky shoreline below the Princeville Resort, and on May 8, a local man was caught in waters fronting Kiahuna Plantation on the South Shore.
