KAPAA — Hokuala (Central I) roared into the 2003 season of the Kauai Jr. Olympic Girls Softball season with a 14-2 romp over West Kauai I (Kraks) behind 18 stolen bases Saturday at the New Kapa`a Ball Park.
Hokuala pitcher Wailana Borrero picked up the win on the hill, holding West Kauai scoreless until the fifth inning while the Hokuala defense committed just one error.
Borrero whiffed four batters and allowed a walk in the win while Nue Wong suffered the loss for the Kracks with three strikeouts, but allowing five walks.
Sara Phillips (3/4) led the Hokuala charge of 14 runs on 10 hits with a pair of scored runs, five stolen bases, and four RBI.
Brittany Brackenridge was a perfect three-for-three with a pair of scored runs, three stolen bases, and a pair of RBI with Shana Tafiti (1/4) helping the effort on a scored run, a pair of stolen bases, and a pair of RBI. Dusty Farias (2/2) rounded out the Central I offense with a pair of scored runs, a stolen base, and an RBI.
Kanoe Carveiro and Jolene Corr sparked the Kraks’ bats with a hit apiece in their three-hit outing with each hitter scoring runs in the loss.
West Kauai I will take on West Kauai II on Wednesday in Waimea while Kapaa will host Da Wahine (Central II) of Lihue at the New Kapaa Ball Park. Both games start at 5:30 p.m. with the league’s 18 Under division kicking off their season with the Island Rebels (Central) of Lihue matching up with Kapaa starting at 7:30 p.m. at the New Kapaa Ball Park.
