Street car racing is the main selling point of the film “2 Fast 2 Furious” which was released on Friday.
The Garden Island Racing Association, which holds street-car drag races, will hold an event on Sunday at the track in Mana.
However, unlike the film which delves into the more controversial aspects of the sport, the GIRA stresses the street-legal program of driver safety in a controlled environment.
“We try and provide a safe environment for the racers,” said GIRA Public Address Announcer Jay Street. “It’s a regulated situation and not a free-for-all.
“We stress racing the strip not the street. Things can turn real bad fast if you are out in neighborhood streets. We want the kids to come out to the track where they can burn all the rubber they want.”
Sunday’s event features bracket racing in three classes, the Street, Super Street and Pro ET divisions.
The main division is the Street class where all cars and drivers are welcome.
Sunday’s gates open at 8 a.m.. Technical inspections start at 8 a.m. and run until 11 a.m. Qualifying time runs begin at noon and end at 1 p.m. Elimination and competitive rounds start at 1 p.m.
The admission for the event is $10 for spectators. Sunday’s event is the fourth major race of the season. The GIRA’s big event runs July 4-5 beginning at noon on both days and running through the evening.
