Over 40 kayakers were stranded for hours Thursday afternoon along the banks of the North Fork of the Wailua River.
A mid-day flash flood isolated the kayakers on a day with sunny calm weather on the coast, but apparently some heavy rain in the center of the island below Mt. Waialeale.
The kayakers were at a trail to “Secret Falls,” a waterfall up the North Fork of the river.
Kayaker Tim Rysdale of Wailua Homesteads was one of the kayakers. He said everyone safely made it back to the mouth of the Wailua River.
He warned kayakers to be prepared when they go upstream on Kauai.
“Stuff happens,” he said, advising kayakers to bring a cell phone, insect repelent and other emergency items.
