The voyaging canoe Hokulea arrived at Kalapaki Beach Sunday afternoon, sailing to Kauai from Oahu.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society’s, the organization behind the canoe, brought Hokulea to Kauai as part of a three-month sail around the state, which began in March. The sail is titled “Navigating Change.”
A Polynesian protocol ceremony was conducted on the beach at Kalapaki to open the canoe crews stay on Kauai.
The canoe will be open for community visits from noon-6 p.m. from Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5. The Polynesian Voyaging Society is expected to offer hands-on learning experiences to hundreds of school children and families during the visit.
The visit of Hokulea is set to run until mid-June. On June 8, the canoe is to be sailed to Hanalei. On June 11 Hokulea departs for a visit to Niihau until June 13.
The canoe is scheduled to be at Waimea June 13-14, and depart for Oahu on June 14.
