The Kapaa football team gave its fans plenty to cheer about on Saturday night at Vidinha Stadium during the Green and White spring football scrimmage.
The Warriors also offered their fans plenty of reasons to be excited about the upcoming season.
The contest ended in a 7-7 tie in which the Warriors had success in all three facets of the game.
The Warriors’ defense was consistently solid throughout the 48 minutes of action as Kapaa defenders got penetration, tackled well and showed discipline against the offense’s misdirection attack.
Kapaa’s defense even scored late in the third quarter to tie up the offense.
Kalen Laranio recovered a fumble for the defense and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown with 2:54 left in the third period.
The Kapaa offense had chances to take the lead in the closing moments.
However, the Warriors’ defense stood tall to hold the offense out of the endzone.
A key spark for the Warriors’ offense was Kalima Leong, who was a threat with both his arm and his legs.
Leong fired a few deep balls including one to Brian Merkel that moved the offense into scoring territory late in the final quarter.
When the Kapaa defensive front pressured through the offensive line, Leong was also able to scramble and buy some time with his legs.
The Kapaa offense jumped on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Kai Lopez, who also played well at quarterback, plunged up the middle for a 1-yard scoring run.
The score remained 7-0 at halftime as the Warriors’ defense controlled the action.
