KALAHEO — Halem Medina and Brandon Chong combined for 23 points to lead Wailua to a 46-37 win over the Kalaheo Pistons as the Kauai Youth Basketball Association (KYBA)’s 14 Under boys basketball season got underway with three games played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center on Monday night.
Devin Tavana posted underneath for a four-point final period as Kalaheo eked past Wailua 10-9 in the final period. However the effort fell short.
Galen Lee notched 10 points to lead the Pistons’ scoring with Tavana ending the night with eight points.
Sparked by the defensive presence of guard Kristen Takashima, the Waimea girls generated turnovers and reaped the harvest as they outdistanced the Kapaa Mystics 40-13 behind the posting of Moani Durant who chalked up a game-high 17 points in the win.
Durant’s performance, however, was not limited to the inside post as she notched a trio from 3-pointland in the first period, combining with guard Natalie Mata’s pair of field goals to lead the Waimea 15-3 outburst.
Mata added 11 points in the Waimea win. Waimea kept the Mystics off-balance through most of the first half, allowing just a Britney Carvalho field goal and a point from Kela Caspillo.
Takashima ended the night with a field goal notched in the third frame.
Cherilyn Kua notched seven of her game-total nine points in the second half as she led the Westside Hornets to a 28-10 win over the Kauai Fire Raiders in the finale.
Fighting back from a 13-1 halftime deficit, the Raiders notched a pair of field goals from Natasha Pigao and Kassie Morishige to match up with the Hornets 4-5 in the third frame only to have the Hornets buzz to a 10-5 final frame behind four points from Kua and buckets by Britney Lanning, Sunni Acosta, and Andrea Lopez.
