The 9-year-old boy hit by a truck after he rode his bicycle into Kolupua Street in Wailua Homesteads Monday evening was listed in critical condition Tuesday at The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu.
According to the Kaua’i Police Department, the child was riding a bicycle on Kolopua Street, when he was hit by a Nissan pickup truck driven by a 52-year-old man. The driver of the truck was not injured. Police are investigating the incident. The man was not believed to be speeding and was not arrested.
Police believe the boy may not have been wearing a helmet. Helmets are required by state law for bicyclists under 16 and in this case, may have prevented serious head injuries, said KPD Traffic Safety Lieutenant Scott Yagihara.
