The Waimea High School Menehune girls basketball team (9-3) will take their first step in a bid for the Hawai’i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) state title by opening the 2003 Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championship tournament by tangling with the Farrington Governors (10-4) on Tuesday, May 13 starting at 3 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Opening day action at the Stan Sheriff will see McKinley (9-5) taking on Kealakehe (10-3) of the Big Island in the 4:30 p.m. contest while Maryknoll (9-7) opens up their bid with a contest against Lahainaluna (12-3) starting at 6 p.m. The evening’s finale will feature Kahuku (11-2) against Kamehameha (12-2).
Should the Menehune be successful on their opening day against the Governors, they will advance to play the Baldwin Bears on Wednesday starting at 3:30 p.m.
A loss to Farrington will have Waimea meeting the loser of the
McKinley/Kealakehe in a 2 p.m. tipoff.
Punahou (14-0) holds the top seed in the HHSAA tournament that will see a champion crowned on Friday evening following the 8 p.m. championship game.
OIA Champion Moanalua (13-0) holds the second seed while Konawaena (13-0) takes the third seeding. MIL champion Baldwin (13-2) rounds out the top four seeds.
Waimea’s traveling roster includes guards Chantelle Briones, Ashley Mier, Lorraine Lagoc, Tiana Samio, Charise Ponce, Janna Soto, Jenalyn Andres, and Ashlee Vea. Forwards are Mallorie Hepa, Jessica Jacinto, Joanna Jacinto, and Virginia Aguilar.
Head coach is Elton Montemayor with Glenn Montemayor as assistant coach.
