Rodrigues advances to finals
O’AHU – Waimea’s Desmond Rodrigues earned the fifth longest leap (43-1) in the triple jump event during preliminaries on Thursday at the state track and field meet on O’ahu.
Rodrigues advanced to the state finals which will be held today.
Red Raiders finish third
The Kaua’i girls golf team had a tremendous showing on the opening day of action in the 2003 David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Golf Championships at the Waikoloa Beach Course.
The Red Raiders finished third as a team with 235 points just behind Waiakea (232) and Hilo (221).
Leading the charge for Kaua’i was Lehua Wise who fired a 36 on the front nine enroute to a first-round leading 70. Jennie Pleas of Kaua’i added an 80 followed by Kimberly Yama’s 82, Mary Akutagawa’s 85, Terra Bell’s 88 and Kiilani Matsuyoshi’ 89.
Final-round action begins today at 7 a.m.
Soccer league to hold registration
AYSO Region 940 West Kauai Soccer Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates and locations: May 17 at Kukui Grove (Near Foot Locker); June 14 at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Proof of age is required for all new players and any player who did not compete in the previous season.
The copy will be kept in our files, so please do not bring the originals unless you want the region to keep it.
Volunteers are needed as coaches, referees, town manger assistants, team parents, registration assistants, etc.
Meeting set for May 21
A general membership meeting of the Lihu’e Baseball League including its officers and board of directors is scheduled for May 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Lihu’e War Memorial Convention Hall.
A highlight of the meeting will be the election of the 2004 Board of Directors. League President Warren Koga urges all members and parents of players in the Shetland, Pinto, Mustang and Bronco divisions to attend.
Tavana’s 26 points pace Southside
Futi Tavana continued his solid play as he led Southside in scoring with 26 points in a 61-32 boys 16 and under community basketball win over Lihu’e in Kalaheo.
Brandon Ballesteros scored 14 for Lihu’e.
In other action, Kaumakani dropped a 69-62 decision to the Lihu’e 5 0’s.
Lihu’e was led by Lance Okasaki’s 15 points. Lanikai Kanahele poured in 17 for the Sonics.
KIF title game set for Hanapepe
Today’s KIF baseball championship game will be played at Hanapepe Field at 1 p.m.
The game pits KIF first-round winner Kaua’i and Waimea (the winner of round two).
