The Historic Hawai’i Foundation has selected the Hanapepe Pool Hall Project to receive a Preservation Honor Award, to be presented Wednesday to Joanna Carolan owner of Banana Patch Studio. Working with the County of Kaua’i Housing Agency and RCK Construction company, Carolan spearheaded the restoration project, preserving the original design while reconstructing the building to today’s standards.
County housing agency director Ken Rainforth recommended the Hanapepe Pool Hall Project for the award, stating, “All aspects of the project show great care and awareness of the historic character of this important building. The owner and contractor are to be commended.”
The project was conceived in 1999 when Joanna Carolan, owner of Banana Patch Studio, purchased the hurricane-damaged building. After reconstruction, Carolan relocated her hand-painted ceramics and fine art business, Banana Patch Studio, to the Historic Pool Hall, thus continuing the mercantile tradition of the building which began in 1926.
