People would have paid big bucks to see Kaua’i’s own Taj Mahal performing with Mother Booker, the mom of Bob Marley.
Unfortunately, only a few Kauaians got into that gig.
The site was a now-defunct recording studio near the Kapa’a Neighborhood Center, made even smaller when storm flood waters nearly inundated it.
OK, it was a few years ago, but the memory of the energy lives on for Fred Dent, musician, producer and part-time Kaua’i resident lucky enough to be invited to the event.
Without having much of an idea of the kind of music that would be produced at the session, Mahal and Booker sat down and began jamming, with Booker teaching Mahal some of the same songs she had taught a young Bob Marley in his formative years in Jamaica.
The result was a compilation on Warner Brothers.
The experience was moving for all involved, including Dent, who leaves Kaua’i soon to begin a summer tour with his band, Yours Truly, made up of players of accordions (two), a violin, and him on guitar.
The group, which has recorded its own CD, plays European, American and Jewish folk music, including klezmer, ancient Hebrew music designed to bring great joy.
Mahal, also a part-time Kaua’i resident, is gearing up for his summer tour as well.
