It took them a little while but the Kapa’a Warriors used their tenacious defense and inside strength to wear down the Red Raiders 44-32 on Friday night in the KIF regular-season girls basketball finale at Kaua’i High School.
With the win, the Warriors earned a playoff date with Waimea on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Kapa’a High School for the second-round title.
The Warriors shot 21 percent in the first half and trailed 15-14 at halftime. However, in the second half of play, the Warriors (3-1 in the second round of the KIF) turned the game around with defense.
Kapa’a forced several turnovers which resulted in easy scoring chances. The Warriors outscored Kaua’i 12-0 to start the third quarter in regaining control of the contest.
The Warriors led 28-21 after three quarters and then built a double-digit lead in the final eight minutes of play.
Ihilani Yama and Tescily Maguire each scored 10 points while Danielle Hill and Tania Tasic combined for 17 points for Kapa’a.
Kaua’i, which shot 43 percent in the first 16 minutes of the game, was led by Holly Iloreta’s eight points.
Farren Higley and Amber Santos scored four points apiece for the Red Raiders (0-4 in the second round of the KIF).
Kaua’i’s four seniors Kelly Dennis, Santos, Delsa Tavana and Krystalyn Kashiwabara played their final contest for the Red Raiders.
In the JV finale, the Red Raiders finished unbeaten in the KIF (8-0) with a 65-17 rout of Kapa’a on Friday evening.
Kaua’i led 16-2 after one quarter and then 42-10 at halftime.
Starlene Kelekoma scored 13 points to lead all scorers while Sherry Gebauer added 12 points for the Red Raiders.
Kennilyn Nakamura tallied seven points for the Warriors.
