A scant six minutes separated the top three overall finishers at the 2003 Steinlager Kaua’i World Challenge one-man and two-man canoe races that was held Saturday starting from Wailua Beach and ending at Salt Pond Beach Park.
The team of Kai Bartlett and Aaron Napolean clearly established their lead off the Wailua Beach, reaching the Hanamaulu Beach relay point with about a minute’s lead over the Karel Tresnak and Maui Kjeldsen team.
That lead broadened to over two minutes by the Kalapaki Beach relay only to have the Tresnak/Kjeldsen team overtake the leader enroute to the Po’ipu relay point.
That margin was short-lived as adverse race conditions saw the Tresnak/Kjeldsen team relinquish their lead to a third place finish by the time they reached the Poipu transition point.
Despite a strong comeback effort, the Tresnak/Kjeldsen team settled for a second place finish, about three minutes off the pace.
